African Development Documentation Initiative

Documenting the past. Holding the present accountable. Mobilising the future.

AfDDI is a non-profit organisation working to advance good governance, transparency, and socio-economic development across sub-Saharan Africa. We document government performance, support critical historical preservation, and equip citizens to participate meaningfully in shaping their societies.

Why We Exist

Across sub-Saharan Africa, two persistent gaps undermine the promise of democratic development. The first is an accountability gap: elected leaders make commitments that are rarely tracked, evaluated, or enforced by an informed public. The second is a documentation gap: critical national experiences, from civil conflicts to governance decisions to citizen voices, go unrecorded, leaving future generations without the evidence base they need to learn, decide, and act.

AfDDI exists to close both gaps. We believe rigorous documentation, transparent accountability, and active citizen mobilisation are not separate causes but a single, interconnected project for the renewal of African democratic life.

Our Flagship Initiatives

Pledge Tracker

An independent, PolitiFact-style monitoring platform tracking the campaign promises of elected executives at national and sub-national levels, rated on verifiable outcomes — not intentions. Our current flagship deployment, Tinubumeter, tracks the 250 campaign promises of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (2023–2027). Each promise is rated Kept, Compromise, Not Done, Stalled, In the Works, or Not Yet Rated, supported by sourced evidence drawn from primary government data, statistical releases, and verified independent reporting.

Governance & Development Research

Governance & Development Research — Evidence for change AfDDI produces governance reports, investigative documentaries, policy papers, and civic education materials that translate documentation into reform-ready insight. Our work draws on a foundation of academic research, including a study of 284 campaign promises across the Buhari administration presented at the African Studies Centre, Leiden University, which laid the analytical groundwork for the Pledge Tracker methodology.

Institutional Partnerships

AfDDI advances its mission through close working relationships with peer organisations whose missions complement our own. Our two principal current partnerships are:

Townhall Radio

A Dutch-registered social enterprise founded by AfDDI’s founder, dedicated to mobilising Nigerians and the people of sub-Saharan Africa for constructive social change through talk shows, music, news, podcasts, and blogs. Townhall Radio provides a platform and distribution services to AfDDI initiatives, including Pledge Tracker, under a formal service agreement, ensuring that AfDDI’s accountability work reaches Nigerian audiences through credible content channels. Townhall Radio’s social-enterprise structure is designed to pursue financial sustainability through earned revenue alongside its social mission.

Nigerian Civil War Documentation Initiative (NCDoc)

A separately registered Dutch Stichting devoted to systematically documenting the Nigerian–Biafran Civil War (1967–1970) and other major civil conflicts in Nigeria, for research, teaching, and peace advocacy. AfDDI and NCDoc are co-producing a documentary on the Civil War, combining NCDoc’s archival and oral-history work with AfDDI’s storytelling and distribution capacity.

Empowering Governance, Promoting Accountability

In many regions, there is a significant gap between government promises and their actual performance. This discrepancy often leads to a lack of accountability, ineffective governance, and slow socio-economic development. Furthermore, citizens frequently lack the necessary tools and knowledge to engage effectively in governance processes. AFDDI aims to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive documentation, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives.

A Passion For Social Change!

01

Foster a Culture of Good Governance

Many African countries experience a significant gap between government promises and actual performance. Election promises and development agendas often remain unfulfilled, leading to public distrust and dissatisfaction. AfDDI aims to bridge this gap by monitoring and documenting compliance with these promises, ensuring that governments are held accountable for their actions and commitments.
02

Strengthening Civic Engagement

Citizens often lack the knowledge and tools to effectively participate in governance processes. AfDDI is dedicated to empowering citizens by providing education, resources, and platforms for engagement. By fostering a culture of civic responsibility and participation, AfDDI helps citizens hold their leaders accountable and contribute to the decision-making processes that affect their lives.
03

Promoting Sustainable Development

Socio-economic development is crucial for improving the quality of life in African communities. AfDDI's initiatives are designed to promote sustainable development by advocating for policies and practices that support economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Adressing socio-economic challenges, is to create a more prosperous and equitable future for all.

Who We Are

A Passion for Social Change!

The African Development Documentation Initiative (AfDDI) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting good governance, transparency, and socio-economic development in the region. AfDDI seeks to document and monitor government performance, advocate for constructive social change, and empower citizens to actively participate in governance processes.

AfDDI builds the evidence and civic infrastructure that makes accountable governance possible across sub-Saharan Africa.

An Africa where citizens hold power accountable and shape their futures

AfDDI’s work is guided by four commitments:

Independence. We do not accept funding from political parties, candidates, sitting officeholders, government agencies of the countries we track, or organisations whose primary purpose is partisan political activity. Our funders have no editorial input into our work.

Evidence. Every claim we publish is sourced, dated, and revisable as new evidence emerges. We rate on verifiable outcomes, not on intentions or rhetoric.

Transparency. Our methodology, our funders, our governance, and our corrections record are all publicly disclosed. We hold ourselves to the standard we demand of those we monitor.

Citizen orientation. The people we serve are the citizens whose democracies these institutions purport to represent. Everything we produce is designed to be useful to them.

Joining Hands for Social Change

The motivation and passion of volunteers within AfDDI are driven by a combination of personal values, commitment to the organisation’s mission, and belief in the collective power to effect change. Their dedication and enthusiasm serve as driving forces in advancing AfDDI’s goals and making a positive impact in our Mother Continent.
